Kate Chaytor Norris on boosting the immune system

Healthy body, healthy mind and healthy gut are all required in order to boost the immune system and have it firing on 6 cylinders.

Here at Tanfield Wellness, I help cover the healthy body bit, Kathryn covers the healthy mind part and here's Kate Chaytor Norris, nutritionist, to help us with what we should be eating.

Thank you Kate, author of "I Wish my Doctor had told me this", for your very wise words.

"The difference between people who get sick with Covid and the people that don’t is how robust and effective their immune system is.

As 80% of your immune system is based in the gut surely it would be a sound approach to look after your gut health – your inner mask so to speak - far more effective than any mask you could wear on your face.

Looking after our gut entails making sure that the gut wall is strong and that the balance of gut bacteria is correct. We all have good and bad bacteria in our gut but we want the good guys to be running the show. If they are running the show it helps to keep our immune system strong.

FOUR THINGS WE CAN DO TO KEEP OUR GUT HEALTHY

1. Feed the good bacteria – eat things like leeks, onions, garlic, chickpeas, sweet potato and chicory

2. Eat fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha and kefir – these help to boost our good levels of bacteria

3. Stop feeding the bad bacteria which thrive on sugar and refined carbohydrates – try to keep all carbohydrates like bread, pasta and rice as wholegrain as possible.

4. Drink bone broth – this contains easily digestible proteins which can be used to repair our gut wall – it is easy to make see recipe on my website

OR if this sounds like too much faff you can buy it at https://www.drgusnutrition.co.uk

Keeping our gut strong is the greatest defence that we have against Covid."
